Onze zoon Mitchell van 25 jaar werd in 2006 gediagnosticeerd met MS. De Lyme-test was negatief, dús hij had MS. Verder is nooit gekeken.

Story about a sickness which could not be healed\found by the Israeli medical services – Q-Fever, Lyme, Rickettsia, Tick Bite

    Hello,

After the Israelis medical services (including heads of Infectious Diseases units in the top 5 major hospitals) couldn’t diagnose my disease, I decided to search myself for the solution for the symptoms I was experiencing for the past 7 month (and later on for another one year during the intake of Doxycycline antibiotics), during a online search I got to Lyme disease, after contacting institutes, associations, labs and international doctors around the world, I was diagnosed by Dr. Meijer in Holland (with lab results from LADR Labs from Germany) with a disease call Q-Fever. Also after I got the lab results and the treatment recommendations from the lab and the experienced doctors in Q-Fever, the doctors in Israel refused to accept the lab results and the European expert’s opinions.

I will not mention names of hospitals and doctors in order not to offend or disrespect them. I have no intention in this story to offend any representative of the medical services in Israel, but to ask them to be more attentive to the hardship of the patients, and not to totally disqualify their opinion.

During the years 2014 and 2015, I was suffering from different symptoms, some more severe than others, in almost any system of the body, that brought me to a deteriorating situation until I was close to being paralysis, with some experiences of not being able to feel or control the hands and legs, feeling that was mostly controlled by discomfort I usually felt in the back of my head and neck and spread from there downwards. I couldn’t sit in front of a TV, computer, or even read a book, and every noise or flash of light would have had a strong impact on me.

    Here is my story:
In the middle of February 2014, during a ride in bus abroad, I started to have kind of a feeling of the blood rushing out of my neck, and gradually I couldn’t open my hands, I had to leave the bus and go to the hospital, they told me that I’m ok. during the way home (by taxi, train) I felt dizzy and had nausea, so before going to the plain, I went again to see a Dr. to check myself, and he told me that it might have been a panic attack. For few days I had strong dizziness (in one case, I couldn’t sit in a car, so I had to walk few km’s by feet.

In the coming months, March till May 2014, I felt tingling in my arms, neck and jaws, I was extremely tired at noon and had to get rest, once traveling by car I felt weird attacks, I had a running stomach for these months, I started to have big and itching pimples on my neck (the upper side, that connected to the head), ringing in my ears, I lost my appetite, I was sensitive to noise, strong or flashing lights and I used to pluck hairs from my legs in big group of hairs. In the same time I started having pain in the bottom part of my right leg, but I was quite sure it was orthopedic issues, as I just joined a running team recently, except that the pain started in an area of a wired bite. I tried resting for some time, and let the place cool down, it didn’t help, and I still had pain in the area of the bite, also during resting.

For the next 2 or 3 months from April till June I started having difficulty to urinate, and the urine came greenish\brownish (later I found out its distinct sign for Q-Fiver).

    • Symptoms from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website, written that Q-Fever causing dark urine and problems in the liver, like started to appear already (and were found in the blood test I did in June)
    o http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/qfever.html
    • Another example is, of a farmer from Holland that the Q-Fever caused him to a problem in the eyes, had a problem to urinate and the loss of appetite as I experienced
    o http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1040683/?

In the end of May, I started to feel pain in my neck (both the sides of my neck were swollen and stiff, kind of bumps between the collarbone and the trapezius muscle) and in the trapezius muscle and hurt beats, especially once sitting in front of a computer, gradually I couldn’t longer sit in front of a TV and read a book. Beginning of June 2014 I came to Israel and did checkups, that revealed I’m suffering from Hyperthyroidism, so my Dr. back then just thought its infection and gave me pills for blood pressure and anti-inflammation, moreover, Dr. for Otolaryngology sent me to do CT test, which increased the inflammation of the Hyperthyroidism. And around July I started to have pains in my bottom right size of my chest, but I thought its part of the liver problems.

I started to wake up at nights with strong heartbeats, sometimes I though my hurt is going to stop; I started to have panic attacks (in one case I stopped a plane from taking off):
    • Similar case happened to Allen Bargfrede, 39-year-old associate professor of music business at Berklee College of Music in Boston, that was bitten by a tick like myself, and no one knew what he has. In the article he is telling about the sudden fear of flights: “I had severe anxiety,” said Bargfrede, who was getting ready to head home to the U.S. when the symptoms began to worsen. “I was crazy scared to get on an airplane.”
    o http://abcnews.go.com/Health/mans-ravaging-lyme-disease-eludes-doctors-year/story?id=24341585

Document from 1966 that was published in Canada by F. Somlo M.D. and M. Kovalik M.D., that was called “Acute thyroiditis in a patient with Q fever“, whereby the two doctors report of the first case that was registered and that ties up the relations between Q-Fever and Hyperthyroidism:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1936859/?

In the same time I started having problems with my right eye, focus problems and falling of my eyelid.

    • Falling eyelid and problems with the whole side of the face are common in Lyme disease
    o http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/signs_symptoms/index.html
    • Exist also in Q-Fever
    o http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=211336
    • The symptoms of Rickettsia, Lyme and Q-Fever are very similar

Immediately I returned to Israel and started a full checkup, Hurt (ultrasound and Holter Monitor), Eye doctors, neuro-ophthalmologists, different ultrasounds, and during that period I was treated in the Endocrinology Unit of a major Hospital in the center of Israel.
Except for the hyperthyroidism the doctors couldn’t find another issue, But many things didn’t go hand in hand:
    • Why my right eyelid is falling (with hyperthyroidism the eye socket swelling and not supposed to have a falling eyelid but the other way around)
    • The liver activity was supposed to start dropping together with the dropping activity of the hyperthyroidism, but It didn’t
    • The hyperthyroidism supposed to cause increased appetite, I didn’t have appetite for a long time
    • Altogether no one could explain why I couldn’t sit in front of the computer and TV, its symptoms that have nothing to do with hyperthyroidism (but Lyme disease and Q-Fever is known to cause Light Sensitivity (photophobia), and other problems for the eyes)
    o http://www.tiredoflyme.com/bizarre-visual-symptoms-of-lyme-disease.html
    o http://www.cdc.gov/qfever/symptoms/

The problems in the eye worsened and I had kind of numbness between the right eye and the right ear. The pains in the neck continued and pains in the teeth started to appear.

In august 2014, I started to wake up regularly at nights around 2am and 5am and later it became fixed for 5am, I used to wake up with severe shakings and a feeling of someone is grabbing me from the top part of my neck and trying to paralyze me and I felt a strong pulse in the area of the neck and the bite I had in my leg.

I couldn’t have a normal conversation with people, the smallest excitement or a bit of thinking brought me to a situation of overwhelming, and I had to lie down and rest.

In the end of August and beginning of September I decided that there is a connection between the symptoms I am experiencing to the bite in my right leg, so I decided to go and meet experts, I went to the head of the Infectious Diseases units in one of the most prestigious hospitals in the center of Israel, she is an expert in tropical diseases, she said she can’t find anything., later on I went to the Dr. considered to be number one Prof in Israel for tropical diseases and travelers health, in one of the biggest hospitals in Israel and he said I have an orthopedic problem and recommended I should continue searching in that direction (he didn’t make the connection between the hyperthyroidism and the different symptoms caused by the Q-Fever).

In continues to the advice of the professor I went to do roentgen test, but nothing was found.

In the beginning of October 2014 I woke up from a shivering\shaking attack at 5am, I couldn’t take it anymore, so I decided to search myself for the connection between the hyperthyroidism and the Bite, suddenly I got to a disease call Lyme, so I went to my Dr. and he said that he doesn’t know much about the disease but he is willing to send my blood for analysis (later on I found out that they didn’t really have these test in the hospital they were sent to, but they were checking other things). I started searching who in Israel know about this disease, but couldn’t find anything, there is hardly even anything was written about it in Hebrew (that’s why I decided to write my story here).
So I started searching around the world and I contacted international associations dealing with Lyme, with people that experienced the same problems, I contacted the world leading company for production of lab testing for Lyme, so I can find out where I can check myself in Israel (found out they are not selling their products here), so finally I asked the national association from America for someone who is expert in that field in Israel or Europe, so they gave me the name and contact details of a Dr. Meijer from Holland that comes to Israel sometimes and another clinic in Germany. So immediately I started to make contact with the contacts given to me and started to get answers by Mail.

During all the months I spent in Israel I couldn’t work, as every smallest stress would trigger painful symptoms, including the problems in my right eye to worsen themselves (if I would have only read a sentence in a book that include a unpleasant situation and my body got into a panic attack), if I closed my eyes it seems as if I was in a car racing track, my head was racing.

In the beginning of October 2014 I suddenly I started feeling pain in my joints, mainly ankles and knees, I woke up at night and find it hard to open the palm of my hands, during the days I had pains in my forearms and calves. I went for ultrasound for the area of the bite and they found I have water in my ankle.
When I went back to my Dr. She wanted to send me to Rheumatologists, and as I already could predict what was to come according to the disease stages, I knew there is no point going from one specialist to the other and I need to treat the source of the problem.

    • The stories in the below links describe the complexities of these diseases, how little is known about them and how hard is to diagnose them. The third link is about Meir Ariel that died from Rickettsia:

I started mailing with my Dr. in Israel, I told her that I think I have Lyme disease and that I want her to prescribe for me antibiotic right now, she thought I completely lost it, but unwillingly she did prescribe for me antibiotics, but also Cipralex (I found out later that its common in Israel that if the Dr. doesn’t find medical explanation for your problems they will in many cases will prescribe Cipralex (is an antidepressant) for the patient), she also told me, that abroad people who says they have Lyme disease, considered to be not normal (she meant Mentally ill) (it will be recommended for the medical services representatives in Israel to give some credit to their patients, to some of them anyway, I brought up sufficient arguments and evident that were worth checking the subject).

On 4.10.2014 I wrote my Dr. in Israel a mail, that I have a disturbing bite on my leg (even though I spoke to her about it half year earlier, and she said that we should concentrate on the hyperthyroidism and leave the not important things for now) and I suspect it’s have something to do with the Lyme Disease, I told her about the research I did about the Lyme and I sent her examples from all over the world, that were similar to my symptoms!!! Never got a replay.

On the 7.10.2014 I sent her another mail:
“Yesterday I was walking and I felt a problem in my right leg, from the area of the bite till the Lymph node and a weakness all over my body. Today I woke up at 5am shivering and with numbness on my left arm. I request to start immediately with the treatment of the antibiotics without waiting for the lab results, and that I understand the consequences of taking antibiotics”.

The same day I got a mail back 7.10.14:
“Hello Ofir, I understand your concern, I have less a problem to give you moxypen then doxycycline, because it’s a more narrow spectrum, and as there is no real medical gasification in my opinion, maybe there is a gasification in life to do so. I’m prescribing for you Moxypen for 2 weeks, but you should see infectologist in the meanwhile”.

On the 13.10.14 I wrote her:
“Hello Dr. there is improvement in my feeling and also in the pain of my joints”

The antibiotics did magic and some of the symptoms reduced dramatically!!

I tried going back and do sport activities after the Endocrinology Unit approved it, but every time I tried it and made a bit of physical effort again I got the feeling of blood kind of draining out of my hand and legs and I got the feeling that I’m almost fainting.

I tried my luck another time with a Dr. in Israel, another head of Infectious Diseases units in another major hospital that said she has an experience in Lyme disease, and once I met her she confirmed to me that the blood test I did in Israel didn’t check for Lyme, but anyway she didn’t think I have Lyme or any other problem and thoughts its only symptoms of the hyperthyroidism and she also thought I should take Cipralex.

During this time I started to plan my visit to Dr. Meijer clinic in Holland, and I went to see him in the beginning of November 2014. I told Dr. Meijer my story and he interviewed me, and took blood samples, he told me that for sure we are looking here at a tick bite that caused infection, and he immediately prescribe doxycycline, and that I should start taking it immediately.
Dr. Meijer said that the fact that I took antibiotics and it made me feel immediately better, it’s a clear and the strongest sign that something is attacking my body (if you suspect something is wrong, ask your Dr. for 2 weeks of Doxycycline and see how you feel).
He was surprise that experts in Israel for tropical diseases didn’t send me to make any blood tests for tropical\ infectious diseases.

On the 13th of November 2014, we got the test results from the lab, with a positive answer to Q-Fever, Dr. Meijer explained to me that the symptoms are very similar to those of the Lyme disease (in this year alone he had 4 cases of patients who were suspected for Lyme and ended up being Q-Fever):

    • Dear Ofir,
Please find hereby the results of your tests. The test of the Q Fever is positive, which means that you were infected by the Q- fever microbe. The symptoms of Q-fever can be similar to the symptoms of Lyme disease.
    Best regards,
    Durk Meijer M.D

When I came back to Israel with the positive results, none of the experts I visited before were willing to listen or even address the positive results that I got from Europe. My Dr. from Holland Dr. Meijer is the person the examine all the cases in the field before they are going to see the head professor in the field in Holland, he has cooperation’s with the most advance clinics and labs in the fields of contaminations from animals and especially Lyme, Rickettsia and Q-Fever (Holland experienced in the past a major outbreak of Q-Fever, therefore they have a lot of experience with that disease), moreover the lab test I did came from a very big and respected lab in Germany, which they specify how to handle the positive results that were showing on the document.

On 1.6.15 expert dermatologist from the biggest hospital in the north of Israel and also a lecturer in a respectable university, checked my leg and wrote in his diagnose that the area of the bite in my leg is clinically suspected to be infected with EMC, which is expression of Lyme (Borrelia).
On February 2015 I have been sent (for the first time) by another head of Infectious Diseases units from a hospital in the north of Israel, for several blood tests for tropical diseases and 2 times the Rickettsia test came on the edge (just between positive and negative(and this is after 7 month with me using doxycycline)), so she thinks I have positive for Rickettsia, so she prescribe me 10 days of Doxycycline!!@!!! It’s so not serious as then I was after so many month of Doxycycline.

for almost an year, since February 2015 I had a lot of Acne all over my back, the head of Infectious Diseases units said its hair follicle inflammation, but as I took Doxycycline (which this is the cure for that problem) she didn’t had an answer.

For a year I took doxycycline, I was under the close care of Dr. Meijer (as in Israel they didn’t know what to do with me), my health condition gradually become better, I tried 2 times to stop doxycycline and it didn’t work as the symptoms hit back and only towards July 2015 gradually we started to reduce the amount of the doxycycline until we stopped it completely on October 2015.

All I’m saying is, if what the Dr. is telling you doesn’t feel right, take responsibility for your health, even if your Dr. doesn’t like it sometimes.

    Thank you for the attention.
